Vitamin K2

Vitamin K2 linked to lower prostate cancer risk

An increased intake of vitamin K2 may reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 35 per cent; suggest results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC).The findings, based on data from the 11,319 men taking part in the EPIC Heidelberg cohort, are published in this month's issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

I was so excited by this news, given the very high rates of prostate cancer and the number of men who are searching for alternative treatments for prostate cancer. About 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.

I began researching the best dietary sources of Vitamin K2. I found that the Japanese food Natto (fermented soybeans) is especially rich in vitamin K2. I had never eaten Natto so I looked into it further:

                                                                          Natto

After seeing natto and reading this description: "The most disturbing aspect of this stuff is it seems to get "activated" when you stir it. What I mean by this is, (and I may actually weep, but...) the slimy coating on the beans develops into stringy, stretchy, marshmallow-like strands that will forever haunt my dreams." I decided that this was probably not a food most men I know would willingly incorporate into their diet.

Fermented dairy products such as yogurt, cheese and kefir make up 10% of Western Vitamin K consumption, but many men may not be eating these foods in large enough quantities to provide the protective benefits of Vitamin K2. As an alternative, supplement your diet with Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis; "friendly" flora which supports intestinal health and the natural production of Vitamin K2.

In choosing a Lactobacillus/Bifidobacterium supplement, be sure to choose one that has been refrigerated from the manufacturer to you. Do not choose a supplement that has been sitting on a shelf. It may have lost all of its ability to be of benefit. Ultraflora Plus is shipped in a refrigerated container to ensure it potency.
